Hey there! I’m actually glad you asked this because I’m getting a tattoo in memoriam of people I’ve loved and lost in my life, and John is definitely an inspiration for it.
I think the thing you need to be most aware of when getting a quote tattooed on you, is the fact that you want it to still be relevant in the years to come, and I think sometimes getting a quote directly about death can be a little overwhelming to some people.
Anyway, some quotes that I found particularly inspirational, in respect to death/dying/life after death, are:
“A brief but infinite forever.”
”You gave me a forever within our numbered days”
“There is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars.”
“It looks like all the hopes we were too foolish to hope”
“The negative image of things blown together and then blown apart”
“I think something becomes of us”
“The risen sun too bright in her losing eyes”
“The dead are visible only in the terrible lidless eye of memory”
“It is the nature of stars to cross”
Sorry there are so many - I hope they’re what you’re looking for. I’m also going to list a few from John’s novel Looking For Alaska, because I think there are some in there that are totally applicable.
“…That part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.”
“She had proved to me that it was worth it to leave behind my minor life for grander maybes”
”I don’t know where there is, but I believe it’s somewhere, and I hope it’s beautiful.”
“Left not even with a ghost, but with its shadow”
”We need never be hopeless because we can never be irreparably broken.”
”And then, when it’s over, be present out there”
”Maybe we are just matter, and matter gets recycled”
”It’s only forever… Not long at all.”
”In short, we are all going.”
“Because memories fall apart, too. And you’re left with nothing.”
I hope these help! :)
